This video has a couple of good tips on how to catch sheepshead. I was rigged with the knocker set up again and fishing with shrimp. There were several things things that for sure helped me catch a bunch of fish this time.
The goal of the day when I set out to make this video was to have fun. To my surprise I met three subscribers during this adventure; those encounters really added a lot of joy to the day.
When I first got to the jetties I was a bit surprised to see that the water was so murky. It was very milky white looking with very low visibility. I started out fishing with small live shrimp and caught a couple of under sized sheepshead. The fishing was really slow for about an hour...
I decided to take one of the larger live shrimp and only use the head and about half of the body. I specifically chose one that was darker in color. Very soon after casting the bait into the water I caught a sheepshead. My thought process at this point was the fatter and darker shrimp pieces would stand out in the murky water and attract more sheepshead bites. To my surprise I was right.
How to catch a bunch of sheepshead:
1. Fish for them at the right time of year, specifically when they are migrating through the area you are fishing in. In south Florida winter months seem to be when the migration occurs.
2. The best time to catch them is when the tide is moving really strong. For some reason they just don't bite well when the water current is slack or moving slowly.
3. I personally think the knocker rig works best. I usually use a number one Owner brand hook.
4. What bait should you use to catch sheepshead? I personally think shrimp works great because they are so readily available in my area. It's a real chore to try and catch sand fleas or crabs where I live.
5. When the water is clearer any live shrimp will catch these fish. I usually prefer to use the small to medium sized ones. I also think that live shrimp works best. There's something about the freshness of the bait that is attractive to sheepshead.
6. If the water is murky, milky or cloudy looking, choose to fish with the darker colored shrimp. I'd actually ask the bait shop attendant to pick me out some darker shrimp and give him or her a tip for doing so, just to be prepared.
